Sometimes there’s a product out there that just seems to work for almost everyone. For us, that’s our SWFA SS 3-15×42 Tactical Riflescope. Both a customer and employee favorite, it’s the riflescope that’s got everything going for it. Not only is it versatile, easy to use, and intuitive, it’s also a great value for an investment piece that’s going to last throughout your entire hunting career.
That’s why we chose to feature the 3-15 riflescope this month, to showcase all our favorite things about this bestselling product.
If you’ve been hunting for your next go-to piece, then you’ve come to the right place.
Why Choose the 1/10 Model?
We offer two different models of the 3-15 riflescope, with this one being the 1/10 MIL model. Why choose this riflescope over the MOA model? The answer ultimately comes down to personal preference. However, we’ve found that this riflescope’s base 10 scale allows long-range shooters to make corrections on the fly more easily. For most, it’s simpler to measure by 10s than it is to measure by fractions, especially as you get into the 700 yards and beyond range. We attribute a lot of this riflescope’s popularity to its base 10 scale, making it the preferable of the two.
What Can It Be Used For?
The beauty of this riflescope is in its versatility. Thanks to the 3-15 magnification, this riflescope is effective for all hunting types and shooting needs. You could use this riflescope to hunt prairie dogs one day, white tailed deer the next, and then to shoot competitively the next weekend. It’s a great product if you’re looking to own one single riflescope that can do it all easily and effectively.
When it comes to riflescopes, the whole is truly greater than the sum if its parts. Here is what each piece of this riflescope can offer you.
The first thing to note about the eyepiece is the eye relief it gives the user. Thankfully this eyepiece offers a generous and almost constant four inches of eye relief, so you aren’t left with a nasty scope bite or sore eyes.
Since this is a coarse fast focus eyepiece, the reticle may not be perfectly clear upon viewing. But, you can easily adjust it for a crisp view of the reticle. Just set the eyepiece to 15 magnification, index your side focus to infinity, look through the scope to the sky (away from the sun), and make subtle, small adjustments until the reticle is sharp. Be sure to take small breaks so your eyes can rest in between adjustments.
Power Selector Ring
The best feature on the power selector ring is the unique cattail that sticks out from the ring. The power selector enables leverage to index the power from one end to another with ease. So instead of using two fingers to grab and twist the power selector, you can quickly and conveniently use one finger to adjust. This is one of the unique features that sets the 3-15 apart from other scopes.
With 30 millimeters (mm) of space, this tube allows more internal movement than your standard 1 inch riflescope tube. This 30mm tube allows for 100-140 usable minutes per travel, as opposed to the 45 usable minutes that a 1 inch tube would offer. Because this tube has more travel, it’s perfect for users shooting a caliber that doesn’t have a great ballistic coefficient. With this tube, you won’t have to buy a unique base to shoot downrange.
This turrett saddle features three knobs for windage, elevation, and side focus that move your point of impact up, down, left, and right.
In the event you miss your shot, this turrett saddle allows you to easily make adjustments to correspond to your point of aim. Particularly helpful for long range hunters, both the windage and elevation knobs have small graduations, otherwise known as a revolution ladder, to help the you track whether or not and how far you’ve moved the dials.
When your reticle is off center even when your positioning and settings are correct, you’re probably experiencing parallax. Perfect for correcting parallax, this side focus can easily be indexed to recenter the reticle and offset any optical issues.
First Focal Plane Reticle
Between the turret saddle and the scope, the riflescope cones out by the objective lens. This is where the first focal plane reticle lives.
In second focal plane riflescopes, the second focal plane normally lives inside the eyepiece behind the power selector ring, so as you change your magnification the subtensions will also change, which means you have to take the time to adjust your reticle accordingly. Why? Because your reticle is always relative to the target.
With a first focal plane riflescope, it’s going to be much easier and more effective to make adjustments on the fly no matter what you’ve set your magnification power to.
This particular objective lens is recessed within the body of the the riflescope to reduce the amount of stray light entering the objective, to keep your view clear and comfortable. If you’re in a considerably sunny area, you may still need extra shade. Luckily, you can easily order our 2 and ¼ inch sunshades through the website or over the phone if needed.
What Doesn’t It Have?
Unfortunately this riflescope does not feature illumination or zero stop currently. However, unless you’re a night-only hunter, this riflescope has everything else you’ll need.
Due to its well-crafted Japanese manufacturing, with proper care and regular maintenance, this riflescope can last someone a lifetime. Be sure to clean it regularly, keep it in climate-controlled storage, and use non-ammonia based cleaners on lenses to get the most life out of your investment. With the right care, there’s no reason this riflescope can’t be passed down to the next generation.
If you have an AR-style rifle, the S.S.A.L.T. 30mm scope mount is a great option for this riflescope. By design, this mount elevates the scope 1.5 inches and forward 2 inches to give easier access to the charging handle and help you determine the right amount of eye relief.
On traditional bolt action rifles, we carry three mounting solutions. We offer low (.80), medium (1.05), and high (1.3) ring mounts that will work for your weapon system.
